Kind Consultancy is working with a specialist challenger bank, which is well established and still growing. They are now seeking a Head of Compliance & MLRO to join them in a full-time, permanent role based in their West Midlands offices.

The Head of Compliance & MLRO will report directly to the Chief Risk Officer and will take responsibility for leading the compliance and conduct function and acting as MLRO, designing , delivering and executing compliance, conduct and financial crime frameworks, with key activities including:

  • Assuming the regulatory responsibility of SMF 16 and SMF 17 and ownership for the design, development and execution of the Compliance Programme and supporting Monitoring Plan
  • Developing policies and procedures, providing oversight and training, across functions, to ensure that these are embedded
  • Developing and delivering second line assessments, such as the annual compliance plan, to ensure that frameworks, policies and procedures are operating as intended, in compliance with applicable regulatory and legal requirements
  • Making practical recommendations that are proportionate to the business, based on a strong understanding of regulatory expectations and a good knowledge of industry best practises
  • Working with the commercial teams by sharing best practise, providing training and giving timely feedback to ensure compliance.
  • Actively contributing to embedding and promoting a compliance culture within the Bank
  • Providing strategic guidance to the Bank on how it should achieve its compliance objectives.
  • Preparing and submitting responses to information requests raised by regulatory authorities
  • Undertaking ongoing horizon scanning of regulatory developments to identify and pre-empt forthcoming changes to the Bank’s compliance obligations and compliance risk profile, and ensuring requirements are met in a timely manner
  • As MLRO, owning the financial crime framework and associated policies
  • Driving, developing and maintaining an effective anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing compliance culture
  • Consulting with senior management, to create and maintain the money laundering risk-based approach and the risk assessment of the firm's customers, products and services, proportionate to the Bank’s operations', scale, nature, and complexity
  • Ensuring the Bank’s risk management policies and risk profile, in relation to financial crime, are maintained and subject to review and approval on at least an annual basis and are compliant with current rules, laws and regulations
  • Ensuring that money laundering risk is considered in the Bank’s day-to-day operation, including in relation to the development of new products, the taking-on of new customers and changes in its business profile.

Our ideal candidate for the Head of Compliance & MLRO opportunity:

  • Has experience of working in a Compliance function at a senior level in the financial services sector, preferably in the challenger bank sector
  • Has experience of interacting, communicating with and presenting to Senior Management and Boards
  • Has some history of working with commercial lending entities
  • Possesses good knowledge of the regulatory framework including the client asset rules (CASS) and of key compliance, AML and regulatory topics
  • Currently holds or has previously held an MLRO title
  • Has a bachelors degree, or equivalent industry accredited advanced certificate, in a relevant subject
  • Has good knowledge of banking products and direct experience of Corporate/Retail Banking sectors
  • Has solid experience of UK regulatory risk management and compliance requirements plus extensive experience in compliance frameworks and implementation, preferably obtained at a small-medium sized regional or local UK bank
