Kind Consultancy is working with a well-established and respected Retail Financial Services organisation which is currently seeking a Self Build Mortgage Underwriting Specialist to join them in a full-time, permanent role paying up to £50,000 with a hybrid work model based in their Essex offices.
The Self Build Mortgage Underwriting Specialist will assess and approve self-build and custom-build mortgage applications, ensuring sound credit risk decisions while supporting customers through a complex, stage-based lending journey, with other key responsibilities including:
- Assessing land purchase, build costs, stage payments, and project viability
- Analysing income, affordability, credit profiles, and exit strategies
- Reviewing build schedules, cost breakdowns, and contingency plans
- Working closely with valuers, quantity surveyors, and technical teams
- Approving cases within mandate and refer complex/out-of-policy cases with rationale
- Monitoring stage release conditions and ongoing risk throughout the build
- Maintaining compliance with FCA, MCOB, and internal lending policies
- Liaising with brokers, customers, solicitors, and internal stakeholders
For the Self Build Mortgage Underwriting Specialist, we're looking for candidates who:
- Have strong manual underwriting experience including complex lending, self-build, development finance and/or bridging exposure
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of Build costs & project timelines, loan-to-cost (LTC) and loan-to-value (LTV) and risk mitigation in staged lending
- Possess the ability to assess non-standard income and complex cases
- Have excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to make risk-based decisions
- Having experience of surveying or property finance would be desirable
