Kind Consultancy is working with a well-established specialist bank which is currently seeking a Head of Business Risk to join them in a full-time, permanent role with a hybrid working model requiring 2 days per week in their offices in the Birmingham area.
The Head of Business Risk will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will lead and own the bank's first line of defence Business Risk framework, with key responsibilities including:
- Ensuring all business areas fully embed strong Operational, Conduct, Regulatory, Third Party, Resilience and Customer Outcome risk practices in line with FCA and PRA expectations
- Setting the strategic direction for 1LOD risk management, ensuring risk ownership is clear, that governance and operational risk practices are effective, and that business leaders understand and act on their responsibilities for managing their own risks.
- Owning the Bank’s Operational Resilience Framework, ensuring continuous alignment with PRA standards and industry best practice.
- Overseeing the annual review and ongoing governance of Important Business Services (IBS), Impact Tolerances, severe but plausible scenario testing, critical resource mapping, and vulnerability assessments, ensuring resilience risks are proactively identified and addressed.
- Ensuring ‘resilience by design’ is embedded in product, change, and technology initiatives, assessing resilience impacts and ensuring new propositions meet regulatory resilience expectations.
- Owning executive level resilience MI and reporting, ensuring clear escalation of resilience vulnerabilities to Risk Committees, Exco and the Board.
- Owning and maintaining the Bank’s Business Continuity Framework, ensuring regular testing, full alignment to the Operational Resilience regime, and readiness for disruption scenarios impacting Important Business Services and the Banks operations.
- Leading the strategic development and execution of the Bank’s Risk Control & Self-Assessment (RCSA) programme, ensuring risks are identified, assessed, and mitigated, and that control effectiveness is evidenced through robust testing activity.
- Ensuring control testing, sampling, thematic reviews, and first line oversight are high quality, risk based, and generate actionable insights, enabling the Bank to remain within risk appetite.
- Overseeing root cause analysis and remediation of operational risk events, ensuring timely, sustainable resolution and strengthening of the control environment.
- Overseeing customer outcome testing and thematic quality assurance reviews, ensuring good outcomes for all customers, including vulnerable customers.
- Supporting leadership to ensure Consumer Duty principles and conduct risk expectations are embedded across the Bank, and that MI clearly evidences that foreseeable harm is being prevented and fair value delivered.
- Owning and enhancing the Bank’s 1LOD risk MI and reporting capability, ensuring comprehensive, accurate and decision ready insights across operational, resilience, conduct, outsourcing, and customer outcomes risks.
- Ensuring effective upward reporting and challenge, preparing high quality papers for Risk Committees, Exco and the Board with clear articulation of themes, vulnerabilities, risk appetite breaches, and required decisions.
Our ideal candidate for the Head of Business Risk opportunity:
- Has proven experience in a Senior Leadership Risk position in a regulated UK financial institution.
- Has expert level knowledge of Operational Resilience and of current regulatory expectations for UK financial institutions.
- Has experience of leading enterprise level RCSA, risk MI, and incident management
- Has previously lead projects or teams where Consumer Duty, conduct and the improvement of customer outcomes is a strategic goal
- Has a track record of building, leading and maturing 1LOD risk functions
- Has experience in procurement, outsourcing and third / fourth party risk management
- Has previously worked with Executive Committees and Boards and has the confidence and credibility to provide challenge to senior managers
- Demonstrates a collaborative, commercially aware mindset with clear strategic judgement
